Golden Valley volleyball nets big win over Atwater

ATWATER – Golden Valley High School’s volleyball team put some distance between itself and Atwater in the Central California Conference playoff race.

Belen Castillo’s 23 kills and four blocks helped the Cougars (22-10 overall, 6-3 CCC) edge the Falcons 25-22, 25-23, 25-20 on Monday night at the Nest.

The win gives Golden Valley a two-game lead and the tiebreaker over Atwater (8-11, 4-5) for one of three CCC playoff spots.

Felicya Zuniga picked up 22 digs and Camille Flores recorded 32 assists for Golden Valley.

Hannah van Warmerdam paced the Falcons (8-11, 4-5) with 15 kills, two blocks and 15 digs.

Pitman 3, Buhach Colony 0 in Turlock – Maddy Halteman’s 21 assists and 11 aces helped the Pride (27-0) cruise to a 25-9, 25-10, 25-8 win to improve to 9-0 in the CCC. Buhach Colony dropped to 4-14, 0-9.

Turlock 3, Merced 1 in Merced – The Bulldogs (16-7, 6-3 CCC) kept pace with Golden Valley with a 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15 win over the Bears. Victoria Larson led the way with 16 kills and three blocks. Julia Handy orchestrated the offense with 44 assists.

Rheanne Lewis led Merced (2-7) with 11 kills and 18 digs.
