Cameron Burston found teammate Morico Williams in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown pass with 7 second left as Stellar Prep came back from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to ruin Golden Valley’s homecoming night with a 16-13 win.
Burston, who verbally committed to San Jose State, led the Thunder on a 98-yard drive with just 1 minute and 30 seconds left on the clock.
“The killer was we punted it to the 2-yard line line and we’re up five points,” said Golden Valley head coach Dennis Stubbs, whose team dropped to 0-4. “We held them and then on fourth down he throws a Hail Mary and some guy jumps up and caught it out of nowhere at midfield.”
The Cougars couldn’t make the defensive stand.
Golden Valley took a 13-0 lead as quarterback Armando Muzquiz scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Dante Askew added a 32-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
“I feel bad for the kids,” Stubbs said. “They’re working hard for us. They want to do well, but we got to have some guys to step up and make plays at the right time. We can’t seem to get it.”
