Depth has been an issue for the Golden Valley football team this season.
The Cougars have routinely played their nonconference opponents tough, just to tire down the stretch.
Dennis Stubbs’ squad did their best to buck that trend Friday night, pushing Chavez of Stockton to the final minute in a 30-22 loss.
An Isaiah Montanez 29-yard touchdown run gave GV hope, trimming the lead to 30-22 with 1:39 to play. The Cougar defense responded, forcing a fumble in the final minute to give them one last chance to tie. The final drive came to nothing and the Cougars fell to (0-5).
It’s a particularly tough loss after Golden Valley went into intermission with a 14-8 lead.
Livingston 44, El Capitan 0 – Jose Mejia opened the scoring with a first-quarter touchdown run as the Wolves (4-1, 1-0 WAC) jumped all over the Gauchos (0-5, 0-1 WAC) with 41 first-half points.
Hilmar 28, Pacific Grove 7 at Pacific Grove – Jonathan O’Brien tossed three first-half touchdown passes and the Yellowjackets (2-3) held on for a 28-7 road victory.
Le Grand 22, Gustine 19 at Le Grand – Cristian Nava scored the second of his two touchdowns with 8 minutes left in the game to complete the Bulldogs’ comeback from an early 12-point deficit.
Stone Ridge Chr. 41, Big Valley Chr. 6 – Bailey Dalhoff had 120 rushing yards and 2 TDs in a home win to open CCAA play.
Chowchilla 35, Dos Palos 14, at Chowchilla – Anthony Stewart rushed for 190 yards, two touchdowns and passed for a third as the Redskins (3-2) ended a two-game losing skid.
